Wireless Festival has become the champion of UK Urban – with The Streets, Dizzee Rascal & Basement Jaxx being the drawcards of the day.
The trade off you make for not having to travel out of London is that the festivals tend to lack character; however they certainly compensate with an up-for-it crowd. The main stage was a mere distraction until Afrika Bambataa took to it. The ‘godfather’ of hip hop did a good job of getting the party started with his infectious beats and rolling rhymes.
Itchy feet kicked in and it was off to the imaginatively named Second Stage for The Streets, however after taking my time at the bar tent and exchanging pleasantries with randoms along the way, by the time I arrived the tent was rammed and there was no way of shoe horning my way in. After soaking up some rays in the fantastic beer garden, the tent had emptied out enough to catch the end of the Boy’s from Birmingham’s set – and I was glad I did as they dropped classics Has It Come To This, Everything Is Borrowed and a mellowed version of Never Went To Church.
Next it was over to the main stage for Dizzee Rascal, who did a masterful job of getting the party started kicking off with a cover of the Ting Ting’s That’s Not My Name. It was a rocking set that ended with a hands-in-the-air inducing version of Bonkers, leaving the crowd baying for Basement Jaxx…
Basement Jaxx were always going to be the highlight of the day and they did not disappoint. As the sun saluted & bid farewell to Hyde Park, the Jaxx took to the stage and had 60,000 hands in the air in no time, kicking things off with a roaring rendition of Good Luck. They played all the classics and even treated Hyde Park to a new track, She’s No Good.
The whole set was as lively and entertaining as we’ve come to expect from Felix and the gang and the day would certainly have been a let down without this spectacular finale.
