Album Review - Elvis Costello & the Imposters - Spectacular Spinning Songbook

In the mid 80’s Elvis Costello did a tour with a difference – The Spectacular Spinning Songbook. On stage he had s big spinning wheel which contained 40 of his songs, between each song a member of the audience was invited up on to the stage to spin the wheel – whatever song the wheel stuck on, Elvis and his band The Impostors performed the track!

This meant two things: every night of the tour the set list was completely different and also the band had to be well rehearsed to play whatever song the wheel stuck on. Fast-forward to last year and Mr Costello brings the Spinning Songbook out of retirement and this live album and DVD is a recording of one of the concerts from Los Angeles.

Spanning the length of his career, he still sounds like it was 1977 on these tracks – Radio Radio and Watching the Detectives are performed with vigour and venom.

Throughout his career he has always been one step ahead of the game with him trying out various styles such as jazz and classical and never resting on his laurels. The album captures the live spirit and energy of an Elvis Costello gig and is an album the die hard fan will want and also the casual observer.
