Damon Albarn was terrified when Bobby Womack collapsed as he auditioned for Gorillaz.
The singer and his bandmates were joined in the studio by the legendary musician to record a track for the group’s third album ‘Plastic Beach’ but Damon was given a shock when Bobby passed out half way through.
He recalled: “The sessions with Bobby were like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I played him the track and told him to just improvise. After 45 minutes of amazing singing he passed out. I can’t tell you how worrying it is to see Bobby Womack lose consciousness on your watch. It turned out that he’s a diabetic.”
Bobby – who says he came out of retirement to work with the group on the advice of his 23-year-old daughter – thought he’d blown his chance after the episode.
He said: “I remember eating a banana and when I woke up I was a Gorilla.”
The resulting song became lead single ‘Stylo’, and Bobby, 66, says his daughter was thrilled with the outcome.
He told The Times newspaper: “My daughter is 23. She loves me, but she’s never reacted to what I do the way she reacted to that track.”
