Due to volcanic ash choking the airways, The Red Chord and support act Those who Lie Beneath are sadly unable to join what Aborted singer Sven de Caluwe announces to be the "Fuck the Volcano Tour". Instead the few who have turned up will be experiencing half of the bill which, considering the line up, is more than compensatory.
Aborted prove that volcanic eruptions cannot stop people from being treated to face melting riffs and gut-churning lyrics in the geological safety of a London basement. De Calowe violently throws himself into the set, opening with Dead Wreckoning and Coronary Reconstruction, Meticulous Invagination also rears its head as the half empty room drunkenly moshes and horn-throws in appreciation.
Riff-laden death grind, complete with song titles worthy of Carcass, assaults the ears and tears the rear as the band set themselves above the stream of generic gore clogging the airwaves today.
As if tonight could not get any faster and heavier, Rotten Sound take to the stage and are in no way subdued by an even smaller audience. They launch into a set dripping with aggression and clinical precision. Machine-gun drums and great slabs of distortion work perfectly with sudden stops and vocals as vicious as the crowd is lifeless.
Docile audience and stranded bands aside, a great gig and fantastic sets from those present makes for an evening of grindcore well spent.
