I'm just sat at home watching highlights of the Isle of Wight festival, well when I say highlights, I mean Goldie Lookin Chain singing 'Your mother's got a penis' to a bunch of 14 year olds, and Simple Minds fairly lacklustre performance of 'Alive and Kicking'!
But still, it's getting me excited about what should be a classic summer of festivals, this being the 40th anniversary of what is the cool Uncle of music festivals, Woodstock. Obviously, things have moved on since the 3 day event fraught with organisational and logistical problems but an experience, atmosphere and line-up that went down in history. Nowadays with a huge range of festivals catering for pretty much every music taste, and companies and people whose sole purpose in life is to run festivals, the experience can't be compared.
After a few smaller industry events and one day festivals like The Great Escape in Brighton, Camden Crawl, Dot to Dot in Nottingham and Bristol, Stag and Dagger in Leeds, but the Isle of Wight is the first big commercial festival of the summer, giving a preview of some of the bands who'll be putting in performances at some of the bigger festivals. Bands like Razorlight, Maximo Park, Pendulum, Prodigy, Neil Young and White Lies all warmed up for the summer with well recieved performances before they play V, T and Reading and Leeds amongst others. And with Download festival on this weekend too, there's likely to be a few of the rock crowd unwashed and sunburnt arriving at coach and train stations around the country in the morning. They always have some huge headliners there, but this year with Faith No More, reunited after 11 years, rock legends Def Leppard, and Slipknot back after cancelling festival appearances last year, there's likely to be a few grins amongst those sunburnt faces tomorrow.
A few of us bloggers are likely to be doing pieces about festivals we're off to and acts we're looking forward to seeing, I'll leave mine for another day, otherwise you'll be getting daily rants about someone else I've spotted on the Glastonbury lineup!
What festivals are you guys off to? Did you go to Download or Isle of Wight? Any highlights?
