The King Blues review/interview @ Reading Uni

It’s always good to be surprised by a band and today was no exception, turning up to the venue expecting to do a review I got the surprise that I was meant to interview the band, with a quick low down I headed backstage to interview the politically charged punk / reggae mash up that are The King Blues .

Backstage we discussed the bands favourite gigs, the success of their current tour, singles and album, but with a band like The King Blues all you need to do is ask the right question and let them roll with the answer, and with a political activist like Itch aka Jonny Fox doing the talking he gives a frank answer. Here’s his take on the G20 protest.

After the interview I propped myself up by the entrance with a nice warm Red Stripe in hand and watched as the crowd piled in, the diversity of music genres in the crowd mirrored the bands, there were SKA heads, Punk rockers, reggae lovers, the folk faithful and of course the student population.

Got to say, I wasn’t expecting a huge amount from this band but they put on a great live show with a real DIY affect to the whole thing, it seemed more sporadic then the vast amount of indie tailored bands out there. The lyrics were sang with much more conviction than on the album which at times sounds more like a pop album than a political one. The highlight of the gig for me was Itch’s poetry, ‘5 bottles of shampoo’ is a fantastic bit of spoken word and had the crowd going as much as their singles ‘Save The World, Get The Girl’ and ‘I Got Love’.
