I have been fortunate enough to attend Wireless Festival for the past two years and have had a blast both times!
This year has definitely been the best year so far!
First act I managed to see was The Ting Tings. Now I only really know two of their songs "Shut Up and Let Me Go" and "That's Not My Name" but that didn't stop The Ting Ting's putting on an entertaining show even though there are only two of them!
I did find myself questioning something during their performance of "That's Not My Name". I did wonder what this attractive young ladies actual name was! She has clearly informed us that it is not Stacy which doesn't really narrow it down much to be honest. Not being an Uber fan of The Ting Tings I had just never heard her actual name! It actually bugged me so much that I was attempting to go on Wikipedia during the performance in order to find out! Turns out its Katie White if anyone is interested/doesn't already know. Not sure what name I was expecting but it just didn't seem to live up to the sheer anticipation I had wrapped around this matter....Anyway, moving on!
Pink (or P!nk as she is known these days) was the Headline act on Friday. Having seen P!nk twice before I had no doubt she would impress. But I didn't expect her to impress as much as she did!
Just like she does during her Funhouse Arena Tour, P!nk makes her entrance by flying down bungee style from a Crane!
Straight away the audience were hyped up and ready to Party!
P!nk's voice live is just incredible! So much power to it! She hits every note with so much ease and moves about the stage so much to make sure nobody is bored/left out.
She played all of her classics Including "Get This Party Started", "Like a Pill", "Sober" and "Rockstar". Not a single moment of dullness was had during her set. One of the highlights was when she got inside a huge transparent ball and rolled OVER the audience! Awesome!
In Summary, P!nk is an awesome Live act - if you haven't seen her then please do. You will not be disappointed!
Saturday comes around and I must admit I was hung over. Seriously hung over. The kind of hung over where you consider staying in bed the whole day. But I couldn't let a day of good music and sun go to waste so up I got and after demolishing a Burger and a Milkshake from a well-known American (with a Scottish name) Fast Food Outlet I was ready for action.
Back to Hyde Park we went.
Missy Elliot was the first person we went to see and for some reason we weren't surprised that she was late on stage! I think half an hour late to be exact! I still haven't found a reason as to why she was late but there you go! I didn't really know what to expect from Missy Elliot. She has some very well-known songs but I had never even wondered what her live performances were like.
In all honesty, it was nothing special!
She came out wearing a Shell Suit that looked like it was from 1991 which I found odd. The well-known songs went down well, the lesser known songs didn't. Then she got changed into a German tracksuit! Now I'm not sure what Missy Elliot was thinking but 6 days earlier England were beaten by Germany in the World Cup so this attire did NOT go down well at all!
Then all of a sudden her set got cut short (strict time schedule at Wireless so if you're late on stage, you're going to be cut off early.) There were quite a few Boo's as she left the stage. I guess you could argue that it was because the music got cut short but I think we all know the real reason people were booing!
Next up was Snoop Dogg! Having caught the tail end of his set at Glasto this year which went down extremely well, I was looking forward to this quite a bit. Snoop delivered once again at Wireless. Mixing catchy melodies with his unique slick raps in that stand out voice, Snoop blasted through song after song keeping the audience involved and entertained.
You could see the confidence oozing out of him. He has so much experience under his belt (been in the business since 1993) that I imagine it's hard not to have confidence.
Snoop went down a treat on a warm Saturday evening.
Next up was 2manydjs. I hadn't ever listened to these prior to Wireless festival so had no expectations whatsoever.
So was very surprised when they blew me away! Very simple concept. 2 Dj's on stage mixing classic song with classic song for nearly 2 hours! Nonstop hit after hit. Incredible mixing skills made it so much better and they had a screen behind them which had the artwork of the current song that was playing projected onto it. Too many songs to mention so I won’t bother but do check these out if you get a chance - fun overload!
Headlining Saturday night was LCD Soundsystem. I also managed to catch these Headlining The Other Stage at Glastonbury this year and they went down a storm. Somehow The Wireless crowd just weren't feeling it...
Not sure why but LCD Soundsystem just didn't pull it off this time. There were boo's and bottles being thrown and the set had to be stopped for a while. I like LCD Soundsystem but they didn't cut it this time.
Sunday arrives and this is the big one! The only day of Wireless that was sold out I believe. Jay-Z Headlining, Lilly Allen, Slash, Tinie Tempah, Professor Green, Wiley and a host of others all on the bill today.
There were Celebs all over the place today, I was fortunate enough to have access to the guest area and just by walking through I saw David Haye, Guss & Ruby off Eastenders and Sean Wright-Phillips.
First act we went to see was Slash! I had no doubt that this was going to be an epic performance! No introduction needed Slash is a Rock Icon. Everybody knows him, most love him and loads respect him.
As the lead vocalist there was Myles Kennedy (from Alter Bridge).
Myles features on Slash's self-titled debut solo album and is the lead vocalist on Slash's current tour.
Played quite a few songs off Slash's debut album which I know well and love so I was more than loving it! A lot of people didn't seem to know a lot of the songs (tut tut) but this didn't matter because as some of you may know, Slash has a secret weapon - A Guitar!
Whenever Slash went into a Guitar Solo the crowd went mad! It was as if we were witnessing something bigger than life. I'm sure a lot of people have "See Slash play guitar live" on their "before I die" list.
Of course Slash pulled out a few classics which sent everyone into a frenzy! "Sweet Child O'Mine" and "Paradise City" went down a storm leaving Myles not really having to sing at all if he didn't wish to!
There was one moment which I thought was amazing. Slash was pulling off one of his trademark solo's and the cameraman must have seen Slash's mirrored shades and had a genius idea because he pointed his camera at Slash's Glasses and it reflected down onto his hands and Guitar! It was as if we were seeing through Slash's eyes! Awesome!
Slash was incredible as expected; Myles Kennedy is an awesome vocalist. Together they do nothing except Rock!
I must confess after Slash I was blown away and on such a high that I stayed in the Guest area for quite a while drinking, celeb spotting and just having a good time so I missed Friendly Fires, Lily Allen and loads more acts!...But there was one man performing that NOBODY was going to miss!
Jay-Z!
Everybody has heard of him, and over the last few years - basically since his controversial Glasto 2008 headline slot - he has rounded up a whole new fan base within the UK.
Each time he has played a UK Gig since Glasto he seems to gather new fans and become more popular. Could this just be luck? Or does Jay-Z have that something special?
In my opinion it’s definitely the latter!
As soon as he appeared on stage 60,000 people went nuts and didn't stop going nuts for almost 2 hours! Jay-Z just seems to suck you into his performance. He has bags of Charisma, confidence and the talent to back it up so it isn't hard to see why he is loved by so many.
He's live band always sound incredible too and give his songs a new edge.
I never used to be a Jay-Z fan before I saw his Glasto 08 set. As in, I never used to listen to his songs. I was more than aware of him and most of his singles but just never really listened to them by choice. The thing is I still don't. But I just love seeing him live. He has so much stage presence and charisma that you can't help but like him and enjoy yourself.
Even if you're not a fan I would suggest you try to catch Jay-Z live - it's the only way to understand what I mean.
Wireless 2010 was by far the best wireless yet.
Jay-Z, Slash and P!nk alone were worth it.
I already cannot wait for Wireless 2011!
